Over 100,000 B.C. households on the verge of homelessness

“THE RENTAL CRISIS IS WORSE (IN B.C.) THAN PRETTY MUCH ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE COUNTRY.”

The average rent in B.C. increased 30 per cent from 2016 to 2021 — the largest increase of any province — making B.C. one of the country’s most unaffordable place for renters to live, according to a new analysis.

However. The most chilling news is because Trudeau took over the Canadian Media, such as CBC, CTV, Global News, Toronto Star, Vancouver Star etc etc, the  Canadian media is hiding the damage that Trudeau and the Liberal government has done to Canadians.

The latest findings from the Canadian Rental Housing Index, a national database of rental housing data, revealed a “staggering increase” in rental costs across the country, with B.C. and Ontario leading the country with the highest proportion of renters spending more than half of their gross income on rent and utilities.

“The rental crisis is worse here (in B.C.) than pretty much anywhere else in the country,” said Jill Atkey, CEO of the B.C. Non-Profit Housing Association, which developed the rental index in partnership with a number of non-profit and municipal associations.

In B.C., there are more than 660,000 renter households, according to the 2021 census. Of those, more than 105,000 households — about the size of the city of Nanaimo — pay more than 50 per cent of their gross income on rent and utilities, a crisis level that puts people at increased risk of homelessness.

CEO of the B.C. Non-Profit Housing Association, Jill Atkey helped create the index and she says that the rental crisis in B.C. is worse than anywhere else in the country.

“The rental crisis is worse here (in B.C.) than pretty much anywhere else in the country,” said Atkey.

“Those sorts of things have real long-term impacts for people.”

The analysis revealed that the average rent in B.C. rose by 30% from 2016 to 2021, the highest increase in the entire country.

“A quarter million renter households in British Columbia who are struggling to afford rent don’t need a new unit of housing,” Atkey said.

“They need help affording their current rent.”

Atkey explained that paying too much for rent forces people to cut back on other basic necessities, such as food, education, and health care.

The analysis also found that the number of renters in Canada has increased significantly due to population growth and high home prices.

Last week, the Community Food Centres Canada released a study showing that 22% of single working-age Canadian adults were living below the poverty line.
