Idle No More
Hello Johnny,
After almost two months of protests, Idle No More shows no sign of slowing down. In the new issue of Megaphone out today we feature the voices of First Nations participants from our community writing workshops, showing their desire for equity and justice in Canada will never be idle.
Native Pride: Through poetry and prose Aboriginal participants in Megaphone’s writing workshops touch on everything from colonialism, the tyranny of church and government and the lasting negative affects its had, to their ancestors, cultures, traditions—mixed with a bit of humour, too.
Requiem for a vendor: Street papers around the world were shocked and saddened by the murders of two Big Issue vendors in the UK earlier this week. We re-publish the words of one of the vendors on why he loved selling the British street paper.
Homeless helping homeless: Surrey Urban Mission shuts down most of its services and outsources its extreme weather shelter when the Mission itself becomes homeless next week.
Also in this issue: Megaphone vendor Bob describes the long-lasting negative affects bullying has on his life; the Vancouver Public Library lets low-income Vancouverites take in high-brow culture; the City of Vancouver proposes fine increases that both help and hinder people who are low-income and/or homeless; arts listings; horoscopes, and more!
